That man again
What to make of the news that Steve Morgan has been put in charge of foreign media relations when the Democrats hold their convention next month and could once more play a role in a Presidential campaign, this time for Barrack Obama?
Mr. Morgan is of course a partner in the public affairs company, Morgan Allen Moore. He was Peter Hain's campaign manager when he ran for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and has worked on two previous Presidential campaigns, for Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004. He also worked for the Hillary Clinton campaign in New Hampshire. Maybe this time he might be on the winning side.
Views about Mr. Morgan are mixed. Commenting on Mr. Hain's Deputy Leadership campaign Phil Taylor said: "What I think is very sad is that I know Peter incredibly well. I've worked for him for a number of years and consider him to be a friend and the Peter I know would have had nothing to do with any of this. He is one of the most straightest, honest, decent men that I have ever met and I just cannot understand what went on in that campaign but I can only assume that decisions were taken by his campaign manager that he knew nothing about because the Peter that I know would never in a million years have ever accepted any donation and not declared it and not followed the rules and in that sense when Peter says there was chaos, that must absolutely be true. That chaos has to be the responsibility of the person running the campaign and that was Steve Morgan."
Then again the last time I blogged about Mr. Morgan I attracted an indignant comment from somebody calling themself 'The Maesteg Pioneer': 'Steve Morgan has a track record of never been defeated when he has stood for public office. He has successfully been elected to Maesteg Community Council and Greenwich Borough Council. The man is a political genius who has made millions out of politics on both sides of the Atlantic in the past 20 years.'
During coverage of Mr. Hain's difficulties with his campaign, the Guardian reported that nearly half of the undisclosed donations 'appear to relate to the period after the closure of the campaign and half to the period after Steve Morgan, a lobbyist, was brought in by Hain to run the operation in a switch of tactics in the summer.' Political genius or not Barrack Obama has obviously played to Mr. Morgan's strengths by putting him in charge of media relations. As today's Western Mail proves, if there is one thing Steve Morgan is good at it is getting publicity.

You fail to highlight a crucial point. Mr Morgan will be working on "foreign media relations". In other words, he will be dealing with media that are read and watched by people who are not actually eligible to vote in the presidential election. In light of his track record, that is surely a wise move.
In reality, one suspects he won't be doing much more than answering the telephone.
Thank goodness they didn't put him in charge of fundraising or compliance.
