More of the same

It is just like being back in the 1970s and 80s. First we have the prospective Tory MPs working as lobbyists or public relations consultants on behalf of businesses and other interests and now allegations of the Labour Party plotting to parachute Trade Unionists into safe seats in return for substantial donations to their election campaign fund.

In the instance the Sunday Times claims that Jack Dromey, the husband of Harriet Harman, was to be installed as candidate for a seat Labour has held for 55 of the past 60 years, in an agreement with his trade union. At the same time as the deal was struck, the union gave £1m to party funds.

Another good reason to reform party funding.
Comments:
Give it a few months Peter and we shall all be back in the 1970s and 1980s. Just wait until the unions are told they must accept pay freezes, privatisations and more modernisation (like working eight hours a day). Indeed, I understand we are already heading towards a Christmas Postal Strike with new three day weeks being planned. You have been warned folks. Get your cards and parcels done early. All we need now, to complete this 1970s and 1980s tribune (sorry, tribute) act, is an unelectable third force in British politics.

Labour or the Lib Dems this time?

I noticed today that some leader of a Trade Union was having a go at Clegg over his "savage cuts" comments.

Even a trade unionist must realise that we are in one hell of a financial situation, following the collapse of banks and funding a war on two fronts - Its because of Brown, that the UK is in such a poor financial situation!

And what about this one, Peter? Same old LibDems - say one thing, do another? It's easy to take the moral highground only to find that your colleagues in Westminster have been in the mud along with everyone else...and in this case (tutoring LibDem MPs to exploit the expenses system), worse than the others.

You know I disapprove of the Communications Allowance and I also do not believe anything I read in the papers. However, if you read that story carefully you will see that it is over-blown. The advice has been superceded but in any case it was just advising MPs how to make the best use of that allowance within the rules.
