On Social Networking
Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins is staging a short debate later today on 'The Twitter Revolution - a time for democratic renewal?'
As part of her 15 minute speech she is presenting a five minute video collage of people who use Twitter and social networking sites and why. This is my contribution to that video.

The most important change about the tools we call Web 2.0 is that they are democratizing communication. Until now companies and politicians have been used to one-way messages, telling us, selling us. Twitter, Facebook, IM and other tools enable customers and voters to talk back.
What most businesses and politicians haven't realized is that they have to change the way they work, to use these tools as much to listen and respond as to talk AT people.
Centrally the government seems to have recognised this and now talks about having conversations rather than consultations [http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/feb/26/daily-mail-government-agenda]. No 10 is following almost as many people on Twitter as are following No 10.

I have posted my thoughts on my blog, but I think you are broadly right.
We need politicians to not treat social media as a tokenistic way to show how modern they are. They must be willing to be self critical in the successes and failures of how social media is connecting with people.
