For the good of the country, go!
The Guardian revealed its real agenda this morning when it called on Gordon Brown to stand down as Prime Minister. Up until now I had thought that they had just been going out of their way to be nice about the Liberal Democrats, but it seems that it was part of a longer narrative plan in which they revert to type as soon as Brown has been replaced.
I am not so sure that they are going to get their way however. It is true that both Jacqui Smith and Hazel Blears have announced that they are leaving the cabinet, that some junior ministers have gone too and that more may follow, but all this really looks like is a clearing out of those who would have been reshuffled anyway.
All the indications are that Brown is going to refresh his cabinet and try to relaunch his premiership. One of the reasons for that is that it is unlikely that anybody wants his job anyway. He will though fail. The situation looks irretrievable but then funnier things have happened and we still have some time until a General Election.
In my view an autumn General Election now looks more likely. If Brown is leading Labour into that campaign then papers like the Guardian will have to make up their mind. Will they hold their nose and support Labour or will they follow the logic of their own argument and back the one true reforming party, the Liberal Democrats?

The Guardian's George Monbiot asked his readers in Walesto vote Plaid today. Read it here:

I can't imagine what he expects to achieve by that!
This sums Plaid up:

AVFP - quite agree with you, currently Plaid have three MPs, even if they take every seat in Wales they will only top 40 - an impossibility!
In addition, I think they have shot themselves in the foot by supporting Labour in the Parish Council on the Bay for far too long.
