Carry on regardless
So things are not as they seemed a few days ago when it looked like the Government were going to crack down on the dubious activities of a number of errant Lords of the Realm. According to today's Times those peers who influence or amend laws to benefit companies that pay them will not face any new restrictions after the cash for amendments row.
The paper also quotes Government sources saying that an attempt by Harriet Harman, the Leader of the Commons, to restrict MPs’ second earnings to 15 per cent of their main salary is unlikely to make progress. Apparently designed to embarrass the Tory front bench, many of whom have second jobs, the government believe that the measure could hit Labour backbenchers hardest if they lose the next election.
So it is carry on regardless. Members of Parliament and the UK Government really are their own worst enemies when it comes to clamping down on the 'perks of the job'.

Until recently Brian Wilson was the UK Government's Energy Minister. Now he is a very big shot Director in the private Wind Power industry and seems to be making quite a mark for himself and his business colleagues. The Wales Assembly Minister Jane Davidson is scheduled to retire soon. She simply adores Wind Turbines everywhere. I wonder if she will follow Brian Wilson's path or just go bicycling round her recycling bin in her garden?
