Semantics

On Dragon's Eye just now former Secretary of State for Wales, Peter Hain described the One Wales Agreement promise to hold a referendum on more powers for the Welsh Assembly before 2011 as an aspiration rather than a commitment.

Is the coalition government starting to unravel already in a storm of semantics?
Comments:
i have to say I just saw it too and was very dissapointed by Mr Hain's response to a referendum before 2011 and Mr Goodway's for that matter. If it's written in black and white on the one Wales agenda then it should be held it will be won. Where do you stand on a referendum Mr Black? Peter Hain isn't part of the Welsh Assembly government but I wouldnt say it is unravelling. As for Plaid members this could put the final nail in the coffin no referendum no welsh language paper and no long awaited Welsh language act. I saw Jenny Randerson debate on monday and she was the weakest out of carwyn jones andrew rt davies and helen mary jones and would have to say Kirsty should be the next leader of the Lib Dems.

I've always found One Wales' wording in the referendum section ambiguous. It says both parties agree to campaign for a "positive" result, which could include a no.

Dotcommentator is right – the wording was ambiguous, so I don’t see how Hain’s ‘aspiration’ comment is wrong. The conditionality of the wording meant that there was wriggle room if it looked like it couldn’t be won.

but there is simply no justification for the stance hain has taken as all the evidence suggests the referendum would be won! Every opnion poll - and i mean every opinion poll - taken in the last 10 years has shown a majority of voters in wales support greater powers for the assembly, so there is no need for any of the parties signed up the one wales agreement to 'wriggle 'out of anything as the referendum is there to be won -with or without peter hain's support (and he flatters himself if he imagines he is such a important political figure that HIs support is so vital to the successful outcome of the referendum in 2011). He clearly has no idea how much his political stock has fallen in recent times!

I cannot watch Dragon's Eye in the US with this stupid IPlayer (could when they used plain old real player) I am curious why Russell Goodway would be interviewed since he's a bit of a has been!!?
