Storm in a teacup
I swore yesterday that I was not going to blog on this, but surely the massive media coverage of Lembit's non-candidature for London Mayor must be the silliest story of the summer so far. It is only when one understands that this story started as a nasty rumour on Tory blogs determined to undermine the Montgomeryshire MP, that one starts to question whose agenda is being followed here.
Ed Davey was equally as silly to allow himself to be drawn on the subject in his interview with epolitix without, apparently, checking with Lembit first. What puzzled me was why Lembit did not kill the rumour stone dead immediately, but then he has always enjoyed the spotlight and clearly wanted to drag his denial out as long as possible. Even when he went onto Radio Wales he could not resist telling us that he would have to discuss it with Menzies Campbell, allowing Matt Withers to speculate on his blog that a Mayoral bid is definitely on.
As a result we got stories about the story all over last night's television and radio as well as this morning's newspapers. I would think that the party's press officers are tearing their hair out again as are many Welsh Liberal Democrat activists.

At least this story has kept us in the news & from people I've talked with hasnt done us any harm around here - only good!
I wouldn't blame the Tories or any other political party for this. Once again Mr Opik has managed to get into the national media limelight. And it's not for representing us, the electorate in Montgomeryshire. It's a shame. He started off with his politics in MOntgomeryshire so well and now seems to be on a mission of self destruction with the local voters. He really does need to sort himself out.
