Baffled of Congleton

David Cameron has run into more problems with the modernisation of his party after a senior Tory MP questioned the direction in which he is going.

Congleton MP, Ann Winterton, told the Parliamentary Monitor magazine, that some of David Cameron's attempts to shift the Conservatives' direction have left much of the party's traditional support baffled:

"People are willing to give him more time to establish what the policies will be at the time of the next general election but I am very concerned about the leadership of the party, and I don't just mean David Cameron."

She told the magazine that traditional Conservative voters have been "baffled" by leader David Cameron's policies, and that supporters felt "concerned that some of the issues that they feel very concerned about are being swept to one side". She said the recent row about Tories abandoning support for grammar schools was an issue that "confused" voters.

The Tories are struggling to find their feet again after Gordon Brown's accession and Government reshuffle. They have not been helped by the fact that their own reshuffle sank without trace. Could Ann Winterton's bafflement be the first stirrings of a fresh grassroots' revolt?
Comments:
Frankly, the Welsh Lib-Dems haven't got much to crow about. Plaid has kicked the Welsh Lib-Dems into touch. About all the Lib-Dems can do is jog on the spot ... on the sidelines.

The more you write us off the better I feel. You should not underestimate our resilience.

First it was Quentin Davies MP crossing the floor, then Edward Leigh MP criticised the direction of the Tory Party, and now Anne Winterton MP expresses her confusion.

This follows closely, of course, the demotion of David Willetts MP who was said to have played a mammoth role in the extensive squabble over grammar schools, plus the other Tory MP who criticised free entry to museums.

As I have said on my own blog, the only people singing from the 'modern, compassionate Tory' hymnsheet are David Cameron and his very close senior MPs. The rest of the Party is as un-revitalised as it always has been, and is a potentially dangerous force against the progressive direction of the UK in the future.

... and despite all that Conservative Party confusion, the Lib-Dems are unable to capitalize on it *ponders y*
