Motto

Following Gordon Brown's revelation that his school motto was "I will do my utmost", Good Evening Wales ran a feature on the subject.

More out of curiosity than anything else I decided to look up my old school's motto. It is "Sapientia Ianua Vitae", translated as "Wisdom is the gateway to life".

Given that the school has churned out amongst others, a Prime Minister, a Welsh MP, a Welsh Assembly Member, a 'Brookside' actor, an Air Commodore, numerous academics, a comedian, professional footballers, an Olympian and a film director then it must have been doing something right. I suppose it depends how you define success and what you believe makes for a 'good' life.
Comments:
I don't know what my school motto was, but as it churned out Aled Jones, me, and a satanic ritual murderer I'd rather not know.

Mine was Gorau Arf Arf Dysg, which roughly translated to the best weapon is the weapon of learning.

No satanic murderers that I am aware of, nor Prime Ministers. Did produce Lord Tonypandy, former Speaker of the House George Thomas.

Why do so many people protest ignorance of their school mottos? Is it a generational thing (ours was on the blazer badge, so difficult to ignors), or is there a desperate need not to appear nerdy?

Oldershaw's was "Certanti dabitur" which, we were told, meant: "To him who strives, it shall be given". Since I have largely survived on luck and some native intelligence, I have done my best to prove it only partially true.

Id say because for some of us school was a long long long time ago. As for appearing "nerdy", a nerd would know their motto. That's what makes them nerdy.

No idea what my school motto was. Our famous graduates include Jenson Butt and Sally from Corrie.

Depressing, isn't it?
