Nationalism

I am grateful to James Graham for drawing my attention to this quote from Danny Alexander:

“Nationalism is about building up barriers between people, liberalism is about breaking those barriers down.”
Comments:
I believe fundamentally in a free society where everyone is included and barriers are broken down so that everyone feels included in the well being of the community.

So yes, I agree with the statement, "“Nationalism is about building up barriers between people, liberalism is about breaking those barriers down.”

I do wonder though if the way in which we sometimes try to break down barriers acts in the mind of some as a catalyst for creating support for organizations such as BNP.

We need to tread carefully and not inadvertently feed oxygen to organizations such as the BNP.

And socialism is about achieving more together than we achieve alone…:-)

Peter, can you explain for me then why the Lib Dems sit alongside the Catalan CiU nationalists and the Basque PNV parties as part of the ALDE group in the European Parliament?

Surely the Lib Dems aren't secretly working to build up barriers in Europe and not telling anyone, are they?
