It's the war stupid

The Independent sums it up, the American people have voted to reject George Bush's Iraq war and Donald Rumsfield is the fall guy.

Reports this morning say that the Democrats are likely to win Virginia without a recount, giving them overal control of both Houses of Congress and the potential to make the President's life a misery. It is being said that George Allen will concede rather than ask for a recount.

The new Speaker of the House of Representatives is a liberal who would find herself at home on the left of my party, whilst the US Senate has its first Socialist member, the senator for Vermont. The results of these elections have surprised even the biggest optimist.

Personally, I did not believe that the Democrats could take the Senate, especially after John Kerry proved what a dreadful Presidential candidate he was through his inability to read an simple script competently. I am delighted to have been proved wrong.

It was just a shame that good old Charlie Brown failed to take the California Fourth District!
Comments:
Not sure how liberal she is overall... she's a US liberal which means a supporter of a strong state and reduction of individual responsibility and freedom... ie she's more a Social Democrat, but that's too like socialist to be politically acceptable in the US...

Then again, there aren't many I'd call liberals in US politics right now...

It wasn't just the war. Corruption and scandal played their part as well. Voters no doubt felt they were being taken for granted - a lesson for politicians on this side of the pond.
