Circling over the carrion

Yesterday's Plenary session saw an attempt by Welsh Labour to invent a new spin term - 'vulture politics'. It was first used by the First Minister during his question time and was then picked up by Business Minister, Jane Hutt in replying to points on the Business statement:

Let us look at this: there is a question to Andrew Davies tomorrow afternoon on the Wales Screen Commission from one of our Liberal Democrat colleagues. It is quite high up on the agenda, so I am sure that the Presiding Officer will ensure that it is reached tomorrow afternoon. There is also a written statement. What more can you want in openness and transparency? This goes back to the vulture politics—the First Minister has coined that phrase for us—that we, unfortunately, see in response to the goodwill that I as Business Minister have, as usual, demonstrated to you today. It would be nice, before Christmas, if you are all here, for you all to back us. We will see.

The idea was clearly to portray the opposition parties, as unprincipled predators picking up any issue they can find to hit out at the Labour Government, irrespective of the merits of the case or the work already being done by the Minister. Unfortunately, the phrase just created the impression of the Government as dead meat.

Rhodri Morgan and Jane Hutt may be happy portraying the government as carrion but I am not sure if their colleagues would agree. Time to go back to the drawing board.
Comments:
It's a vogue phrase at the moment.

Do you think she got it from here?

Furious Dave Jones has slammed the 'vultures' he believes are circling over Ninian Park.

The Bluebirds manager lost patience after Cardiff's 3-1 defeat at Colchester United and said: 'Some people, it seems, are waiting for us to falter.

'The vultures have been circling and they are waiting for things to go wrong. It amazes me.'
