Plaid Cymru's Leanne Wood has announced that she is prepared to go to jail rather than carry the proposed new ID card. Typical! Just as Labour were started to struggle to get the legislation through, she gives them an incentive to redouble their efforts.

Tempting though the prospect of Leanne getting banged up in Holloway is, there is a slight problem in that the government is not actually proposing either to compel everyone to purchase the card or to offer it for inspection on demand.
The argument that some future government might bring such measures in - as when the UK last had I/D cards during the war - is risible unless one believes that they would be incaple of introducing an I/D card themselves if the system presently being proposed is rejected by parliament!
There remains a valid argument that I/D cards will be an expensive fiasco because the technology is still in its infancy, but Leanne is simply grandstanding and misrepresenting the current proposals, either deliberately or because she's stupid. Which do you think is the explaination?
