The price of petrol
It was reported on the radio this morning that the loss of refinery capacity in the USA as a result of Hurricane Katrina, has meant that the price of petrol there has risen to an unprecedented three dollars per gallon. By my calculation this is the equivalent of £1.67.
Given that a litre of petrol in my part of Britain is currently selling for around 90p then a gallon of petrol here would cost around £3.41 or $6.16, twice the price the Americans are paying. It is a shame that it took such a terrible tragedy for these economic and environmental realities to hit home in the States.
