Watching the Nationalists

The growth of blogging has seen a large number of political sites emerge. There are some such as this one, where an elected representative seeks to offer an insight into the political process, comment on current events and establish a dialogue with his or her constituents. There are others that shadow elected members, reporting on their actions, their speeches and their public appearances. And of course there are the sites set up to watch the activities of an individual political party.

A 'watch' site is currently established for Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the UKIP. The Tory one has fallen by the wayside. Now a new site has emerged dedicated to following the progress of the Nationalists in Scotland and Wales. Nat Watch's first big scoop is typical of the genre but intriquing nevertheless. They report:

Welsh nats have delivered an insult to our veterans – mere days before people of all ages across Britain celebrate VE Day.

Plaid Cymru carries an offensive section on its official website celebrating the disgraceful crime committed by its former leader Saunders Lewis, who burned down an RAF bombing school in 1936, just as Britain was preparing to fight the Nazis in a fight for our very existence.

Incredibly the nats’ official site refers to it as the “celebrated burning”, which “sought to highlight the evils of militarism” (that would be fighting Nazis).

The article, in the party’s history section, goes on to place the so-called threat to the Welsh language in the Llyn Peninsula as more important than battling fascism, saying the purpose of the burning was to “draw attention to the threat posed by military developments to the cultural and linguistic integrity of the Llyn peninsula.”

The author goes on to celebrate a split jury verdict in Caernarfon and to bemoan a later trial in the Old Bailey, which found the arsonists guilty, as the English establishment having its way over poor old Wales.

Finally, the article celebrates a petition raised against the verdict, which in Plaid Cymru’s opinion betrayed “arrogant ignorance of the culture and language of Wales”.

Nat Watch understands that most ordinary, freedom-loving people will find this sort of inflammatory and misguided language as incomprehensible. That Saunders Lewis sympathised with fascism is bad enough. That Plaid Cymru to this day celebrates his criminal activities against our armed forces at a time when the rest of the world was focussed on defeating the Nazis, is shameful.

My first reaction on reading this was 'surely not, no political party would put such a hostage to fortune on their official website.' However, at the time of writing this it is still there. Who says that Plaid Cymru have abandoned their principles in pursuit of power?
Comments:
A Welsh Nationalist left messages on my website saying that the 2nd World War was an Imperialist's war, and he wrote:

Denmark, Sweden and Norway did nor participate in the Second World War, yet they managed to rid their countries of Nazi rule by simple non-cooperation

I assumed this nonsense wasn't typical of anyone, let alone supposedly serious politicians, although I am aware of Plaid's history re. fascism and appeasement. It seems that things haven't changed much.
